Join Tim Burke from the University of Newcastle for this free, drop-in hands on experimental drawing session with his Exquisite Drawing Machines!

What is an Exquisite Drawing Machine?

These Exquisite Drawing Machines draw in random and sometimes mischievous ways. Witness them hop, clatter, spin and zip about while making all sorts of weird and wonderful drawings.
Exquisite Drawing Machines showcase seventeen small, wind-up drawing devices. These machines were made by tinkering with existing objects. Tinkering does not seek to invent something new but rediscover the value of something existing when used in new ways.

About Tim Burke:

Timothy Burke is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Newcastle. In 2018 he completed a PhD where he re-functioned toys into drawing machines to explore qualities of randomness, parody and play. After completing his PhD, Timothy applied his knowledge of tinkering in his role as the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Makerspace co-coordinator. Timothy’s work has been exhibited and published internationally, and he has been teaching and researching in Newcastle since 2014.
