The Big Draw
The Big Draw Newcastle is a fun day of drawing for families, adults and children aimed at encouraging creative thinking through drawing.
The Big Draw is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing. Every year more people across the world join in Big Draw events and in 2014 Newcastle held the first large-scale collaboration of a Big Draw event in Australia.
In 2014 the Big Draw Newcastle will take place from 10am - 2pm on Saturday 12 April at the following locations:
- Maritime Centre
- Newcastle Museum
- Newcastle Region Library
- Newcastle Art Gallery
Paste ups at Newcastle Museum!
Let your imagination run wild! Experience the modern take of ancient Roman graffiti (and see our Colosseum exhibition while you are at it!) at our drop in Big Draw activity. Drop in, paste up and add your artwork to the Museum’s Poster Pole. The workshop will be hosted by illustrator Liz Anelli who will engage and inspire your creativity.

Newcastle Region Library
Visiting illustrator Leila Rudge will workshop with children to explore the art of Shaun Tan’s ‘The Lost Thing'. Children will use a variety of mediums to create their own Lost Thing.
Time: 10am – 1pm
Aboriginal Youth Arts / Youth Council: Civic Park activity
Past Present Future / Youth Council will set up a medium size art space within Civic Park providing a variety of art based activities for all age groups and skill levels.
Three art spaces each will have a separate focus and target age group. Art hubs will include:
- Digital Media hub will provide opportunities for participants to try basic graphic design and animation. Workshops will teach participants to draw with digital tools and computer software. Target age group 10+
- Visual Arts: A local Aboriginal artist will provide lessons in traditional and contemporary art and storytelling. Participants will complete a small canvas piece and will be encouraged to contribute to 1 large collective painting. Target age group 6+
- The art and crafts hub will have a variety of simple activities which encourage creative art expression. Newcastle youth council will run a fruit and veggie art activity where the participants have the opportunity to then eat on completion. Target group will be 2+
Newcastle Art Gallery
Big Draw Art Cart 10.30am - 12pm
Kids and their families can walk on top of the Peter Maloney inspired maze, and use a map they must draw to escape it to form a work of art.
Rock/Sketch 12 - 2pm
All within the fully figurative exhibition, sketch a live model (clothed) with a DJ playing alongside to get your creativity flowing.
Newcastle Maritime Centre
Make a paper plate sea caterpillar that will stretch out along the front of the Maritime Centre. Map drawing in pastels with a local artist.
Honeysuckle
Newcastle Now is hosting well known local artist Trevor Dickinson to lead drawing activities along the Harbour.
