Shibori Textile Workshops

Sat 25 Mar 2017
10:00am - 12:00 noon and 01:00 - 03:00pm
Learn the traditional Japanese textile art Shibori at Newcastle Museum.  Shibori is a technique of manipulating fabric and using physical resists to slow or stop the dye and create patterns on the fabric.  Simply put - shibori is Japanese for tie dye.  But it is so much more than rubber bands and string !  Learn how to stitch, wrap, tie, fold, clamp, and twist fabric to create beautiful patterns with the traditional blue indigo dye.  No experience required.

The session will cover:
- How to create the indigo dye, shibori tools tand how to use them (provided)
- Practicing the technique with one silk scarf or linen tea towel (provided)
- The opportunity to bring your own fabric (white, natural fibre) to be shibori'ed and dyed too.

You will need to bring an apron, plastic bags to take home wet fabric, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty (just in case of spills and splashes)

When: 10:00am - 12:00 noon | Saturday 25 March
             01:00 - 03:00pm | Saturday 25 March
