Science Week 2013

From Out in Space astronomy presentations to iconic film Back to the Future, Science Week is going to be awesome this year.

Lisa Harvey Smith presents her work on the SKA telescope

Lisa Harvey Smith is  an astronomer, based at CSIRO’s Astronomy and Space Science division in Sydney. As Project Scientist for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), she plays a leading role in commissioning and early science from the telescope.

Lisa's research covers diverse topics such as massive star formation, astrophysical masers, cosmic magnetism and the interstellar medium of our Galaxy.

Communicating science to a wide variety of audiences is one of her passions. This year she started mentoring programs in two schools; one in metropolitan Sydney and another at a remote aboriginal community in Western Australia.

Lisa will present a talk titled “The SKA telescope – illuminating the darkest corners of the universe” at the Museum from 5.30 -7pm on Thursday 15 August.

Newcastle Astronomical Society Exhibition

The Newcastle Astronomical Society have provided some stunning night sky images taken by their members which will be on display in the Museum Theatrette through out the week.

Out in Space

The night sky is an amazing place, but we rarely take the time to stop and enjoy it. Join us ‘Out in Space’ and you’ll learn how to find constellations and use the Southern Cross to navigate at night. We’ll also fly out into space and visit planets in our solar system. After being ‘Out in Space’ the night sky will never look the same again!

Back to the Future

The hugely popular American science fiction film starring Michael J Fox is back for a one-off Science Week special! See the movie about a teenager who travels back in time from 1985 to 1955 where he meets his future parents in high school and accidentally attracts his future mother's romantic interest.

But Wait There’s More Science Show!

Even before going into to see the wonders of going Back to the Future you will see Newcastle Museum’s fabulous fun Science Show. You could even be part of it as we will need plenty of assistants! Find out what happens when you put a bouncy ball and breadboard together and how you make the museum glove stand up spookily all by itself!

But wait – there’s even more! The first 200 kids will get to take a FREE special Museum Science Bag with all sorts of mini experiments so you can be a scientist at home.
