Refugee Week Film Fest

A program of family-friendly short films made locally, nationally and internationally.

We invite you to join us for a showcase of the best independent refugee, migrant and diaspora short films drawn from Newcastle and across Australia.

Refugee Week Film Festival includes two films made by young people and artists from Tantrum Youth Arts - Antigone and Love is Friendship.

Tantrum has been working with a group of newly arrived young people from a variety of local high schools over the past year, hosted by San Clemente High School. The students have been attending weekly workshops throughout 2014 with Solomon Nagbe and Tantrum’s Lucy Shepherd. The film festival will showcase two of the films produced out of these workshops – the first, Antigone, was collaboratively written by the students and is based on the Greek myth. The second, Love is Friendship, has been written by one of the participants Rachel Saidi, and brings together students engaged in the program and the greater Tantrum community.Both films were shot and edited by Solomon Nagbe.

The Newcastle Museum session will also feature a multidisciplinary performance titled The Endless Journey, a modern day fairy story that aims to provoke discussion about Australia’s treatment of children who are seeking asylum on our shores. Created and performed by Jodie Kell (composer) ,Lu
