Oils Ain't Oils
Do you have the power and the passion to perform at the launch of The Making of Midnight Oil exhibition coming to Newcastle Museum in February 2015?
Oils Ain’t Oils is a competition inviting local musos of all kinds to create a unique cover of a Midnight Oil song for a chance to perform at the VIP Opening of The Making of Midnight Oil exhibition in front of members of the band and invited guests.
This is an amazing opportunity for anyone who has ever had anything to do with this iconic Aussie band that spent much of their early years performing in Newcastle pubs such as The Ambassador, The Palais Royal and The Mawson Hotel (Swansea), and headlined the 1990 Newcastle Earthquake Relief Concert.
Entrants should make their cover song their own and create a piece that is unique and unexpected. For example:
• ‘U.S. Forces’ - performed by an all girls’ choir
• ‘The Power & the Passion’ – by a Veterans’ ukulele group
• ‘Short Memory’- by a High School Band
• ‘Read About It’ – performed on garbage can percussion
• Or you might prefer to dip into some of the band’s later work like ‘Redneck Wonderland’ and ‘Surfs Up Tonight’
Remember, members of the band will be present and we want to show them a warm and heartfelt Newcastle welcome. Winners will get to meet members of the band and be among the first locals to see the exhibition at Newcastle Museum.
1233 ABC Newcastle will professionally record the top three entries and play them live on the radio in the lead up to this event! This opportunity is certainly something special to add to your musical resume.
Keep your recording simple, use a smart phone, tablet, webcam or any basic recording device. A video recording is preferred but if you can only manage an audio recording that’s okay!
Oils Drummer Rob Hirst will be judging the entries, along with exhibition curator Ross Heathcote from Manly Art Gallery and Museum!
If you’re serious about entering this competition make sure you read the terms and conditions!
Entries are open from 1 - 21 November 2014 and can be uploaded using the web form on the promotions page at www.abc.net.au/newcastle
