About the book Hunter Wine : A history
The Hunter has Australia’s oldest wine region still in production and one of the most famous places in the world to visit. Yet it’s history was not well known. Hunter Wine : A history (published by NewSouth) changes that by tracing people and places, famous and forgotten, across six generations from the earliest vine plantings in the late 1820s to the cusp of wine globalisation in the early 1980s.
Wine writer Max Allen says Hunter Wine ‘sets a new benchmark for writing wine history in Australia’. According to Jeni Port this is ‘an important Australian wine book that uncovers new truths, challenges old myths and moves at a cracking pace with a delicious wine tale just right for the present’.
About the film Squeeze A Flower (1970)
To celebrate the launch of the book Hunter Wine, the Vines, Wine & Identity project team of the University of Newcastle, Newcastle Museum and the Hunter Valley Wine & Tourism Association have obtained special permission from the National Film and Sound Archive for a once-only screening of a film shot in the Hunter wine region in the late 1960s. Squeeze A Flower (1970) is a madcap made-for-TV ‘orphaned’ feature starring Walter Chiari, Rowena Wallace and Dave Allen. Don’t miss this opportunity to see it!
