Earth Science Week 2015

The Hunter Earth Science Discussion Group (HEDG) collaborates with Newcastle Museum to provide free public talks each month on a range of geological topics. During October the focus is on Earth Science Week events for International Map Year.

William Smith and the map that changed the world 6.15 pm, Tuesday 13 October

The 2015 theme for Earth Science Week is 'Visualising Earth systems'. To celebrate, this talk discusses William Smith's map, published in 1815 – the first geological map to cover a broad area. Smith realised that characteristics of rock strata such as the fossils could be used to match strata across the UK. As well as predicting the location of coal and other resources, Smith's map pioneered the way we map and visualise geology today.

Local geological maps and computer graphics will also be on display.
