Divercity

Newcastle’s inaugural Divercity cultural festival invites locals to take part in free workshops, activities and performances representing the diverse cultural backgrounds from which our city’s residents hail.

Amnesty International Newcastle, Welcome to Australia Newcastle and Newcastlte Museum have teamed up to host the day-long event, to be held at Newcastle Museum on June 22.

There will be a full line-up of free dance and theatre performances, music and craft workshops, a film festival, an art exhibition and more.

The festival aims to provide hands-on opportunities for members of the public to see, taste and touch other cultures, and to demonstrate the ways in which cultural diversity enriches our city.

Come along, throw down a rug on the grass near our stage and enjoy your picnic lunch.

Antigone

Tantrum Youth Arts Short Film - 11.30am, Museum Theatrette

From the participants of Tantrum’s ‘The Antigone Project’, comes a bold, new imaging of the classic Greek story Antigone. This short film tells the tale of one of the most enduring teenage characters of all time, and her quest to do what’s right, no matter the cost. Antigone's story is set against a backdrop of war, and involves themes of honour, shame, defiance, rebellion, bravery, power, family and love.

Young people from the African refugee community, together with professional artists Solomon Nagbe and Lucy Shepherd have created this short film, developing skills in creative expression, communication and team work.

Thank you to the Newcastle Museum, Penola House Josephite Refugee Support Network, San Clemente High School, and the Community Relations Commission for a Multicultural NSW for supporting this project.
