ANZAC Day 2013

Visit our special Field of Remembrance this ANZAC Day.

Newcastle Museum will honour the lives of the men and women lost in war by creating a field of crosses and poppies this ANZAC Day.

Over 750 crosses marked with the names of service men and women, along with around 1000 red poppies, will carpet Newcastle Museum’s lawn in a Field of Remembrance this ANZAC Day.

Building on the successful event in 2012, this year the Museum took the extra step of inviting members of the community to send in the names of loved ones to add to the collection. The Museum has been overwhelmed with the huge community response, with many people sending in multiple names of family members and friends.

The original collection of 250 crosses came from the Newcastle sub brach of the RSL which were placed around the Cenotaph in Civic Park during the 1950s. This year, thanks to the generous support of the Maitland Men’s Shed, we have an additional 500 crosses each marked with a name.

Museum volunteers will also be placing around 1000 red poppies on the lawn as a mark of respect for the fallen. Last year the poppies became a place of reflection and play for visitors on ANZAC Day, with the littlies enjoying the colour spectacle and others taking the time to reflect on those past

A permanent feature of the Museum is the display of war memorabilia in the Newcastle on the World Stage gallery. Throughout the year visitors write the names of people they wish to remember and post them a wall in the exhibition. These names have been collected and will be displayed on the Museum Poster Wall next to the Field of Remembrance.

Newcastle Museum has also provided Newcastle’s Tower Cinema with photos of soldiers to be displayed in the Cinema Foyer over the ANZAC Day period.

The Museum will be open on ANZAC Day.
