Rock this City

16 Nov 2017 - 04 Feb 2018
10:00am - 5:00pm
Newcastle Pub Rock is a term used to describe bands performing popular mainstream music in the pubs, clubs, nightclubs and taverns in Newcastle's inner and outer suburbs during the 1970s and '80s.

It followed trends that occurred in other major cities in Australia.  While Countdown was being introduced to young Australian television audiences, live music was already being performed in large numbers of pubs and clubs that existed in both the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions. This time 1974 - 1987 became known as the Oz or Pub Rock era.

This exhibition explores pub rock in Newcastle but does not include the thriving alternative, folk, jazz or punk scenes and is focused on local not touring bands.
