Miss Porter’s House as Artists’ Muse
In 2019 Newcastle’s Athena women artists accepted an invitation from the National Trust’s Miss Porter’s House Museum to develop artworks as responses to objects made or owned by Florence Porter and her daughters Ella and Hazel – culminating in this brilliant exhibition!
The Porter family of women were prolific producers of clothing, household textiles and exquisite craftwork - from christening gowns to stencilled tablecloths. Their creativity and home have been the inspiration for a dazzling array of works by Athena members.
Produced in collaboration with Newcastle Museum, this exhibition presents remarkable original artworks and the unique collection that inspired them.
