UNDERWORLD: Mugshots from the Roaring Twenties

Descend into the seedy underworld in the new photographic exhibition revealing the dark side of the Roaring Twenties.

Explore more than 130 candid and compelling mugshots taken by New South Wales Police between 1920 and 1930, unlike any found elsewhere in the world.

The 1920s is remembered today for jazz, Art Deco glamour and images of socialites dancing the charleston. Yet the decade also had a dark underbelly, of vice, violence, gangs and guns. This side of the era was captured in a remarkable collection of glass-plate negatives taken by Sydney police, now part of the NSW Police Forensic Photography Archive, held by the Justice & Police Museum.

Immerse yourself in all things Underworld with the stunning accompanying book and an exciting line-up of programming and events.

Save the date for our underground party NM:PM Roaring Twenties Razors & Ratbags on Saturday 6 April!
