Launched in 1922 to replace another ship of the same name. She was torpedoed by the Japanese Navy submarine I-180 off Crescent Head, New South Wales while in a convoy on 29 April 1943. When she sank, thirty-four crew members died and five of her crew waited until they were rescued by two fishermen.

Launch Date: 1895

The steel steam tug CHAMPION was known as 'John Brown's Yacht', and was lavishly fitted out with a built-in piano in the saloon for Brown's guests on deep sea fishing excursions. The CHAMPION was famous throughout its working life for salvage feats and for difficult jobs. It was bought by Waratah Tug and Salvage Company in January 1953, but sank at its berth in Newcastle in February 1954.
