Field of Remembrance Project

Field of Remembrance Project is a collaborative project between Newcastle Museum and The Newcastle and Hunter Combined Schools ANZAC Commemorative Event. It aims to rediscover the lives and stories of the service men and women who lived in Newcastle and the Hunter Region, and commemorate their service in War.

Schools are invited to research a service person with a connection in the Hunter Region and contribute to the ongoing Field of Remembrance display that is exhibited at the Newcastle Museum every ANZAC Day.

The Field of Remembrance display is made up of the Newcastle Sub Branch RSL and community white crosses that each acknowledges the name of a service person with a connection to the Hunter Region. Schools will need to provide 100-200 words of text, an image of the service person and an image of their school/class. The information provided by schools will become part of the Newcastle Museum's annual ANZAC Day display and be utilised on the Museum website about service men and women of the Hunter.

This project is a great way to engage your students in a meaningful community research project where they develop and apply their historical enquiry and communication skills and engage with historical content. Your student's research helps continue to build on this community project by finding service personnel and adding their stories to the Field of Remembrance. Your students will be able to see their service person's name on a cross displayed on the 25th April every year on the Museum lawn as well as access their research information on the Museum website. Their research will be seen and utilised by other members of the Hunter community.

For further information on this project or to be included in the Field of Remembrance for please submit your research via email to Bree Rooney, Audience Engagement Officer (programming).

If you would like to book a school visit to the Museum, please call the Audience Engagement Officer (education) on 4974 1422.
