Turukilliko means "To Grow" in the Awabakal language

Turukilliko is a low-cost NESA-accredited Teacher Professional Development Day at Newcastle Museum, in collaboration with CSIRO and The Wollotuka Institute. Experiment with fire-starting technologies and materials, be gifted an original Indigenous dance, or weave together Indigenous culture with the latest technology.  You have your choice of workshops presented by the CSIRO and The Wollotuka Institute. 

Suitable for:

  • Primary teachers
  • Early Secondary teachers in STEM and the performing and creative arts

Teachers will receive:

  • Fully developed resources for inquiry-based learning
  • Practical ways to incorporate Indigenous Knowledge and Culture into their classrooms
  • Two small focused workshops of their choice
  • Attendees in the arts workshop will be gifted an Indigenous dance from the Wollotuka Institute to share in their classroom

About the day:

The day begins with a Cultural Considerations session from the CSIRO, Indigenous STEM project, I2S2. This session will enable you to begin to unpack your worldview, and start the learning journey to understanding the impact of your worldview on education and your place as a teacher to all students in the class, increase your ability to build meaningful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and community. Then we will break for lunch, and after lunch we will split into three groups depending on which two workshops you would like to attend.
 
Please indicate in your booking which two workshops you would like to attend and whether you have any dietary requirements or other special requirements.

Cultural Considerations:

During this session you will be provided with the foundational knowledge and understanding of key cultural considerations that recognise the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and identities. We will explore key topics that relate to our own personal perspectives and worlds. This is imperative when beginning to construct an understanding of Traditional Knowledges.

Workshops:

Please choose your first two preferences upon booking. Workshops have a limit of 25 people and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. We will do our best to accommodate preferences.

Workshop 1

Fire! A Burning Question presented by CSIRO
This workshop is an Inquiry into the energy transfer involved in different fire-starting methods traditionally used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This will be a hands-on workshop, where you will explore and discover which fire-starting methods are more effective, and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying STEM involved in Indigenous Knowledges held by First Nations People of Australia. You will experiment with the different methods and wood combinations needed to achieve smoke, and you will experience the learning journey that your students will travel on. As an educator, you will develop deeper connections to traditional context and learning.

Recommended for Early Secondary Science educators
 

Workshop 2

Technology, Engineering and Indigenous Knowledges Workshop presented by CSIRO
During this workshop you will participate in activities that integrate technology and engineering principles with Indigenous knowledges.  You will learn how to run the activities and challenges in the classroom environment and will be provided with handouts and information to assist you in the classroom.

Recommended for Primary and Secondary Teachers and no prior experience in technology or engineering is necessary.

 

Workshop 3

Traditionally Inspired presented by The Wollotuka Institute

Throughout this workshop, you will gain a deeper understanding around how to be inspired by country or school locations to effectively embed Indigenous knowledges into the arts. The session will start with addressing the participant’s fears when implementing Indigenous perspectives into their classrooms. We will dispel these fears and provide you with the tools required to embed Indigenous knowledges into dance and art. You will learn a series of dances and will work towards creating a dance for your classes. You will be gifted one dance to incorporate into their lessons; this dance will have a strong focus on water and the Awabakal people.

I2S2 Online Learning Program

The I2S2 Online Learning Program provides professional development for teachers to develop their skills in both cultural capacity and science inquiry.  Schools and teachers are supported with classroom materials and other resources as well as online support and coaching to assist with teaching science using contexts that highlight the links between Indigenous and western science knowledge and ways of working.
 
The online learning program is a virtual tool offering teachers the opportunity to establish a community of practice, facilitating professional dialogue between schools based across all States and Territories of Australia who are also delivering and/or planning to deliver the I2S2 program.
